PROJECT
Final Year Studio Project
In this anglicised
society, the majority of Singaporeans today mainly converse in English as their first
language, followed by Mandarin which the younger generation has neglected over the years. As the older generation are not exposed to the digital age, they always tend to feel that
they had it “harder” or “better” than the current generation. Hence, Singapore today is experiencing a shift towards the English and Mandarin language.
The premise of the project seeks to explore the notion of the language shift in Chinese Hokkien dialects and its effects in Singapore today. Additionally, this project also showcases how via educational means, the cultural and language gaps between the younger and pioneer generation can be bridged, in hopes of getting them to understand the roots of their culture better.
